Having read the book well over a month ago and then given it to my daughter who is now almost to the end, I enlisted her help on this one. She gave me this wonderful analysis:
"Vivien is the female version of Peter Pan who as a child was able to live in a world of fantasy (seeing the cracks in the earth), flaunts the establishment and takes care of orphans (lost boys); Jimmy is Wendy in male
format--he takes care of everyone (Dolly, Vivien, father, and orphans). Dolly is Tinker-belle: during the Blitz she sees only what she wants to see and is blinded by jealousy. When everything falls apart,, she blames those around her and is too egocentric to see how her actions could and do affect others."
